Impossible Landing: Landing an Airbus A321XLR at St. Barthélemy Airport!

Flight simulation pushes the boundaries of what is possible in aviation. Recently, we decided to test the absolute limits of the new Aerofly FS Global update by attempting a landing that real-world pilots would call pure madness: touchdown of an Airbus A321XLR at the notoriously dangerous St. Barthélemy Airport (SBH/TFFJ).

Against all odds and after an adrenaline-pumping approach, we successfully landed the aircraft! Here is how this incredible flight went down.

Why St. Barthélemy (St. Barths) is an Aviation Nightmare

Located in the Caribbean, Gustaf III Airport at St. Barthélemy is famous for being one of the most extreme airports in the world.

The Tiny Runway: The runway is just about 650 meters (2,100 feet) long, ending directly on a public beach. It is strictly built for small prop aircraft like Twin Otters or Céssnas.

The Hilltop Approach: To land on Runway 10, pilots must fly incredibly low over a hilltop public road, clearing passing cars by just a few feet before dropping the nose sharply onto the tarmac.

Putting a long-range, heavy commercial jet like the Airbus A321XLR into this environment is an absolute recipe for disaster.

The Approach: Skimming Over Street Traffic

As we captured in our viral screenshot, the hilltop approach was terrifyingly close. Flying in American Airlines livery, the A321XLR pitched forward blindly over the hill.

The aircraft was flying so low that it perfectly skimmed right above the SUVs and cars driving on the hilltop road. One slight mistake with the airspeed or pitch, and the landing gears would have crashed into the traffic. The physics engine of the new Aerofly FS Global update made every bit of wind resistance and turbulence feel completely real, adding to the intense pressure.

Brakes, Spoilers, and Reverse Thrust: The Successful Touchdown!

Bringing a massive jet to a complete stop on a 650-meter runway requires flawless timing.

The moment the main gears touched the tarmac, we slammed the maximum brakes, deployed full spoilers, and engaged maximum reverse thrust. Thanks to the precise handling and a perfectly executed flare, the Airbus A321XLR screehed to a safe and complete stop, just inches before running out of runway!
