Flying into Courchevel Airport in France, widely considered one of the most challenging and terrifying airports in the world, is the ultimate test for any pilot or aviation enthusiast. Surrounded on all sides by towering mountains and featuring one of the world’s shortest and sloped runways, attempting to land large aircraft here is an extremely high-risk endeavor.
✈️ The Thrilling Flight Story: When Qatar Airways Couldn’t Quite Touchdown
As seen in the image, during this particular flight, I made an attempt to land a Qatar Airways aircraft on this notoriously difficult Courchevel runway, but ultimately couldn’t complete the landing, causing the flight to come to a halt right there.
- Geographical Challenges: The runway at Courchevel is not flat; instead, it features a steep uphill gradient, making speed control during landing exceptionally difficult.
- Flight Outcome: Due to the combination of the runway’s short length, the aircraft’s size, and the complex approach dynamics, safely executing the touchdown wasn’t possible. As a result, the landing was aborted, and the aircraft came to a standstill in this dramatic position.

Whether in a flight simulator or real-world aviation, attempting to fly into a dangerous airport like Courchevel—especially trying to land a major airline like Qatar Airways—is an adventure in its own right. Although this particular attempt didn’t result in a successful landing and the aircraft had to stop midway, it has provided invaluable lessons and a drive to improve for future flights.
